I decided not to spend much time reflecting on the year just gone. As soon as I realised that New Year’s Eve was actually here and happening (in the bath at 10pm on New Year’s Eve, no less), it felt more useful to spend a little bit of time thinking about the year ahead. (That said, 2016 was very good for me, personally, as aside from health and happy memories it also laid the foundations for the wonderful things I’m anticipating over the next few years).
Habits for 2017
1. Yoga. I dabbled with yoga at the end of last year, and while it was only a Youtube video class in my living room, I really enjoyed it. Whenever the feeling strikes, I’ll try to remember to reach for the yoga mat to stretch out my limbs and slow down my breathing.
2. Reading. I love to read, and despite how little time I’ve prioritised for devouring words and turning pages, I’ve a stack of half-read books beside my bed. I’d like to make a habit of reading regularly this year, so, once a week (or more often if possible), I’ll be setting my alarm a bit earlier every morning. Right now I’m guilty of scrolling through Instagram and Facebook the moment I open my eyes (isn’t it the best and worst pleasure?!), though I suspect unplugging and reading a book with my morning bowl of porridge would be better for me. I may only read for twenty minutes at a time, but that would be twenty minutes more than before.
3. Fresh ideas. I have a collection of notes, scribbles of ideas and a myriad of unopened emails (to myself, from myself). All of these things are suggestions and prompts for posts, important ‘life lessons’ to remember and various subjects to research. But, the idea of wading through it all and turning it into some form of calendar feels a bit exhausting… So, I’ll take Bethany’s advice and simply let those ideas fade away with last year, trusting that the good ideas will circle back to me.
Finally, I’d like to just pick one word to channel my energy and focus for this year…
2017: A year for Courage
I’m going to need buckets of courage to buy my first house this year – in fact, Lee and I have saved our 10% deposit and are now on the ‘home straight’, spending the next 3 – 6 months saving up our fees. Mortgage appointments, credit checks and house viewings will all be happening in the front half of the year, and I’m both intimidated and hugely excited at the prospect. But mostly excited, I think!
And, I’m going to need plenty of courage to persuade myself to ‘open up’ on this blog (learning by trial and error, and by no means achieving anything near to perfection). I hope you’ll be here to let me know what you think, offer criticism or a different perspective where you think it’d help me to hear it, and of course, share your thoughts and experiences with me too.
So what about you? What resolutions have you made for 2017? Or have you picked a single word too? Whatever the case, I’d love to hear what’s going on for you. 🙂
